A Few Disconnected Notes

I have just a few disconnected notes this morning. The first is that I heard Nancy Pelosi, in an interview with Charlie Rose on Howard University Television this past Monday evening, say that 'high unemployment and food stamps are good for the economy because they actually create jobs'. That is as near to an actual quote as I can remember it. Unfortunately, I don't have the context for that comment, because I had just turned to the channel while flipping stations and was not recording the program. I'm looking for more information. If I find it, I'll pass it along.
Another thing I've noticed in recent days is the media reporting concern about foreign nations looking to replace the U.S. Dollar as the currancy by which the rest of the world's currancy is measured. But in the process of reporting this, I have yet to see one of the reporters suggest a good reason for this, so I would like to put one on the table for comment. I believe this situation has come about because of all the money the Obama administration has printed and put in circulation. This action can not have any effect other than to devalue the dollar, making each one of them worth less than they were before Obama printed another bale or two or three.
On a sadder note, it seems that former President Jimmy Carter is really losing his memory. In a news interview on Monday I heard him deny having said that most of the opposition to President Obama's plans comes from the fact that Obama is black. I have no love loss for Jimmy Carter, but it is always sad to see this happen to anyone. I wish his wife could keep him out of the public arena, as Nancy Regan did for her former president husband.

Beginning To Have An Effect.

Apple's iTune Store and Amazon's Kindle and its Wispernet are beginning to have an effect. In an effort to avoid surrendering their digital rights to other companies, the Time Inc. is leading an industry-wide joint venture to create a digital store for magazines. Publishers who have been loosing advertising revenue faster than water runs over Niagara Falls, are doing this as part of an effort to avoid repeating the mistakes made by the recording industry when it ignored the growing market for digital media.
"The new service, as yet unnamed, would serve as a digital storefront for magazines, possibly newspapers and other publications and is expected to be announced in about a month. The launch is planned for 2010," according to an article published in the online Financial Times.
I have carefully watched the growth of the digital "printed" matter industry over the last several years, and I have experienced its advantages myself. On the basis of my research and experience, I think it safe to say that I would not at all be surprised if, in the next twenty years, we will find it more and more difficult to go out and actually buy a printed paperback book, newspaper, or magazine. Hardback books is another matter. I believe they will be around a little longer than that. But even they will eventually fall victum to the electronic age.
It Bush's Fault!

Was the International Olympic Committee's decision not to give the 2016 games to the city of Chicago torpedoed by anti-U.S. sentiment? You might think so from what the Chicago Times is reporting.
Some Chicago officials say anti-American resentment likely played a role in Chicago's Olympic bid dying in the first round Friday.
President Obama could not undo in one year the resentment against America that President Bush and others built up for years, they said.
There must be resentment against America, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said, near the stage where he had hoped to give a victory speech in Daley Center Plaza. The way we [refused to sign] the Kyoto Treaty, we misled the world into Iraq. The world had a very bad taste in its mouth about us. But there was such a turnaround after last November. The world now feels better about America and about Americans. That's why I thought the president's going was the deal-maker."
And State Rep. Susana Mendoza (D-Chicago) said she saw firsthand the resentment against America five years ago when she was in Rio de Janeiro. "I feel in my gut that this vote today was political and mean-spirited," she said.
Idiots! Did it ever occur to them to think that maybe Rio had the better claim? Of course not. The fact that the U.S. Olympic Committee has had internal problems for years couldn't possibly have had anything to do with it. The fact that the U.S. has hosted the games four times in the last 30 years while Brazil has never had the opportunity before couldn't have had anything to do with it. The fact the half of the citizens of the city of Chicago made it clear before the vote that they did not want the games in their city couldn't have had anything to do with it. No! None of this could have had anything to do with last week's decision. It must have be the fault of the Bush administration. It's all their fault.
Idiots!
Even the Presidential press secretary, Robert Gibbs, wasn't too clear on where the White House stood on the matter. "I think you saw both at the U.N. General Assembly, you saw at the G20 last week ... I think virtually every measure of our standing in the world is different than it was just this time last year. So I don't read too much of that into this." Sounds like a little bit of double speak to me.
