  • Another Missed Opportunity By Obama

president Obama blew it again -- big time.  Why he didn't use the killing of Osama Bin Laden as an excuse to declare victory and withdraw from Afghanistan is beyond me.  He could have started the troop withdrawal and stopped the drone bombings and made a lot of people on both sides of the world happy.

Undoubtedly his advisors are feeding him some story about abandoning folks, but in that area of the world it's just plain crap.  No matter how long we stay there, we will not affect they way people do business there.  When we withdraw, it will go back to the way it was before we went in, and nothing we can do will change that.  The difference is that by leaving now, we can save some lives that will otherwise be lost.

Furthermore, by leaving when Bin Laden was no more, Obama would have been a hero and seen as fulfilling a campaign promise -- sort of -- and he would save a fortune that could be used to stimulate the economy or to pay down the national debt.  By staying, he clearly is breaking another campaign promise made to those who put him in office and is still spending money that would best be used in other ways, and he is continuing to make the locals madder and more resentful of the U.S. than they already were.

The man is incompetent and needs to be kicked out of office!

  • Honestly, I'm confused why he didn't take that as an opportunity to leave Afghanistan. He's acting just like Bush, as far as wars go. Although his thing in Libya is worse.

  • I think you've hit on a major problem with current american politics - in Obama's case he is in the position of being damned if he did and damned if he didn't.
Your idea is a good one - in an ideal world, but I think as president, Obama has discovered that none of his decisions and promises can be that simply ordered.
Now one of his trusted advisors, Leon Panetta is advising him to leave a long-term residual force in Iraq - an even dumber idea.
Obama has to deal with congress - and neither party wants us to leave - for a variety of reasons - most of them based on their local political well-being.
That being said, there is no doubt that the sooner we extricate ourselves from Afghanistan, the better.
